Out of the Square
2019
What began with the theme ‘To Go’ in relation to the food industry, ended up with a project where the goal was to provide an experience and awareness about food.
Having travelled through multiple school systems, and seeing the differences within educational institutions sparked an interest to try and understand the origin to where and how young people get their knowledge of food.
The rationale of this project was that based on previous conversations with staff, psychologists and parents. The conclusion is that with a lack of knowledge and experience within basic foods and nutrition, young people could develop eating habits that would take them further down the path of unhealthy behaviour.
The Mission
The mission of ‘Out of the Square‘ is the result of witnessing a failed programme to simply provide young people with a healthy snack for the day.
The idea of the programme is learning by doing. This means cooking simple recipes with students, which they can easily recreate at home. As a product of this immersive experience, students can take home a little food sample to either share with their family or keep as a snack for the next day.
The Packaging
The packaging was specifically designed for this project, allowing the food samples to be safely transported. The packaging is produced from recycled cardboard and designed to be folded without needing any glue to hold it. The cardboard has 2 corrugated edges, which entail the information on the meal that was created. This allows students to tear off the flaps and keep a small ‘recipe booklet’ of each meal cooked together.
