“Everything real was imagined first.”
~ The Velveteen Rabbit
Play is a wonderful interaction of environment, imagination, and creative self-expression and BiKA offers an opportunity to connect these more freely than ever, literally.
“Everything imagined can be made more real with BiKA.”
~ Jesse Rebekah
Making, building, and shaping as part of intuitive play is essential for developing creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence, and doing it with BiKA adds to the adventure.
Like all real adventures, using BiKA to explore, discover, experiment, and create, adds to the experience of fun and freedom. BiKA is a collection of unique connection pieces, which allow for the construction of imaginative objects, beyond those just found in a box or made of plastic or metal. BiKA connectors differ in material, function, and tactility and provide the opportunity to use natural and artificial environments as part of the creative process.
BiKA is an opportunity to create!
What
Nowadays, many toys are created with the idea of an end result in mind.
Starting with the image on the packaging, the exact pieces you need and step by
step instructions. This virtually leaves no space for imagination in the act of creating.
BiKA is a set of tools for play with no intention of an end result in mind,
other than moments of discovery, experimentation and expression through
the act of play.
Why
Through play, children learn to engage and interact in the world around them.
By means of exploration through play, children are capable to come to
their own decisions and conclusions ultimately, gaining independence
and empowerment through this act.
How
BiKA is a set of connection pieces with the opportunity of variety by means
of variation in function, tactility and materiality.
There is an importance of creating no instructional constraints, children can realise their own story, their own context and making choices through play.
Workshop
The BiKA Set was created in collaboration with 25 children in the age range of 9 –12, over the course of three interactive workshops. The learnings and outcomes of these workshops had a significant impact and influence on how BiKA evolved and developed. They were a tool to create reciprocal conversations through making, playing, and discovering together. The workshops and research for this project were a part of a collaboration with Eva Horvath.
We combined our interests by working with children from different schools and age ranges to gain first-hand experience of the challenges of being a child, what empowerment means to them and how and when they feel strong and confident. The workshops allowed us to reenter the child’s minds and to understand their perspectives, gain honest reactions and answers.
