Blaudruck
Du wirst dein blaues Wunder erleben
2025
This year-long research began with that simple quote, one that has come to embody my experiences across two transformative summer seasons. What started as an intrigue with the elusive colour blue, one of nature’s rarest and most complex pigments, evolved into a deeper exploration of Blaudruck and the global histories of plant-based dyeing.
In the summer of 2024, I set out and opened myself to the learning process, ready to encounter, ready to witness the wonders of blue. I followed the life of the woad plant (Isatis tinctoria), from seed to harvest, experimenting with leaves and seeds and processing techniques to coax colour from the plant. To my surprise, the results spanned more than blue alone: pinks, greys, soft greens, and, on occasion, blues, making me feel like an alchemist. Following the plant’s transformation from seed to colour was both humbling and empowering.
This journey brought me beyond colour. It carried me into the history of Blaudruck, into hands-on conversations with experts and makers, and into collaborations with women whose practices are rooted in care, craft, and curiosity. Through interviews, shared experiments, and material research, I came to see blue not just as a dye, but as a way of being in relationship with plants, place, and tradition.
I do not consider myself an expert, but a craftswoman-in-process, often with blue-stained fingers. Someone seeking to explore, exchange, and honour the knowledge generously shared with me. I offer this work as both a reflection and an invitation.
